Glycolysis Matching Game (intermediates only)
Glycolysis Matching Game (intermediate products and enzymes)
Important Points About Glycolysis:

Trapping Glucose in the Cell: Hexokinase is responsible for trapping glucose inside the cell by sticking a phosphate on it so it's too bulky to get out . In the liver, glucokinase replaces hexokinase.
The act of sticking a phosphate on the end is called phosphorylation and is done by "kinase" enzymes. Energy is used in this process.

Energy using steps (2 ATP used):

  • Glucose --> Glucose-6-Phosphate

  • Fructose-6-Phosphate --> Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate

Energy producing steps (4 ATP produced, 2 ATP net gain after replacing the initial 2 ATP used):

  • 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate --> 3-phosphoglycerate

  • Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) --> Pyruvate

Mnemonics:

Intermediate Mnemonic (mildly inappropriate for those under 18)

Gross guys favor fat butts, good boys prefer pretty pink pajamas

Gross - glucose

Guys - glucose-6-phosphate

Favor - fructose-6-phosphate

Fat Butts - fructose-1,6-bisphosphate

Good - glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate

Boys - 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate

Prefer - 3-phosphoglycerate

Pretty - 2-phosphoglycerate

Pink - phosphoenol pyruvate

Pajamas - pyruvate

Enzyme Mnemonic (crass, but effective. Please look elsewhere if you prefer to avoid inappropriate memory tools. Adjust wording to your personal preference).

Honestly - Hexokinase

Ignoring - Isomerase

Pen*s - PFK-1 *rate limiting step*

And - Aldolase

Getting - G3P dehydrogenase

P*s*y - Phosphoglycerate kinase
Made - Mutase
Everything - Enolase
Perfect - Pyruvate kinase
